Welcome to my 160th gems article. This is the place I share some of the newest news, thoughts and means for maths lecturers.

1. Algebra Heat-Ups
@geoffkrall shared a year’s well worth of algebra heat-ups. These are made to match with the US curriculum where students research maths in discrete chunks, which is quite distinct to the technique we choose in the British isles. In the US, college students examine a program in Algebra, then Geometry, then Algebra 2. I formally end my Assistant Principal function and grow to be Head of Maths on 1st September. I put in the first week of the holiday seasons getting trapped into Head of Maths things, which I totally savored. I created a variety of curriculum changes, rewrote our techniques of do the job, established assessments, planned initial lessons, that variety of detail… I’ve also used some time arranging classes for Certification of Further more Maths which I am going to be training for the very first time from September. I have a class of 32 excellent 12 months 11 mathematicians raring to go. After getting a four yr split from teaching A degree to set up a new school, it truly is attractive to have calculus back in my daily life. And trig identities! As much as I have loved concentrating on Critical Stages 3 and 4 for the final few years, these subject areas are my content location.

I am off on getaway with my loved ones for two months tomorrow – we’re heading to a cottage in Cornwall. I won’t be able to wait. When I get again, I am seeking forward to a pair of chilled months at the close of August, including catching up with maths teachers at Dr Frost’s triannual beverages.
